Be a Resource

The media people that are likely to want to speak to financial planners are usually working on stories that will help people: help them get out of debt, make smarter investment decisions, or save for retirement.

They look to financial planners to be a resource for these people.

When you become a resource, the media will come back to you again and again.

A resource on what? On the same subject matter and topics that are the everyday stuff of your business, your practice, your interaction with clients and customers.

How you can help people – that’s your story.

You Are NEVER the Story

Unless you’re a Hollywood star or some kind of oddball, to the media you are not a story.

So forget about breaking your way into the media spotlight with “news” about how great or successful you are, how impeccable your credentials are.

The media don’t care. You need more. Your story is

Three Clever Ways to Promote Your Online Business

July 27th, 2008

Promoting your business is not limited to ezines and ebooks. Here are three clever ways to promote your business that are refreshingly different and will give you a marketing edge over your competitors.

1. Electronic Catalog Marketing

Create a catalog of products or services in e-book or auto responder form. Give the catalog away for free to your web site visitors. Ask other web sites, that aren’t in direct competition with your business, if they would like to add their products or services to the catalog. If they do, just ask that in return they either link to your web site, run your promotional ad in their e-zine or place your banner ad on their web site for a set period of time. You could ask them to also give away the free catalog because you would already have your ad(s) in the catalog. Since you created and compiled the catalog

Office Supplies Key Ingredients to Entrepreneurs

July 27th, 2008

Starting a small business is the dream that many people would like to accomplish. But not everybody can handle the pressure of being pulled from all angles and not getting enough sleep. Getting a business of the ground, or at least functioning enough to reap the benefits, can take up to a couple of years.

Creating efficiencies in the business largely depends on the office supplies used for management and organization. Now, there are several types of office supplies, from pens and paper to label printers and business cards.

Small businesses differ from the large corporations in many ways, but the single largest contrast is staff. Many entrepreneurs come from large business to avoid the office drama and secure independent freedom. They want to take the risk and reap the rewards.

Networking is perhaps the most important factor in starting a new business. Valuable contacts are relied on for expertise and channeling. The

Read, study and digest this list and with you in mind, evaluate which one or more of these causes for failure could become a barrier between you and success.

1. Lack of a Positive and Well Defined Purpose for Your Business Idea.

Success will elude all who do not have a high primary purpose, idea or goal at which to aim. With evaluation and desire, you’ll arrive at a decision knowing exactly what that goal is or isn’t. Lacking a fixed goal is one of the major causes in over 90% of all failures.

2. The Lack of Ambition to Rise Above Mediocrity

How much hope is there for a person who doesn’t care whether he improves his lot in life? Either that person is lazy, fears or is naive. The requirement is to elevate one’s self in business, life and to achieve any kind of success, and one must pay the accepted price.

RSS Will It Really Become Mainstream

July 27th, 2008

I am not one to have New Year’s resolutions, but I do plan ahead. As we reached the last quarter of 2004, I decided that 2005 would be, for me, the year of article writing and RSS.

I have kept to my plan, but what has been happening on the RSS front? I have dutifully been using Blogs and RSS throughout 2005 to date. What about everybody else, though? Has this been the year when RSS has taken off?

One thing for sure is that there has been a lot of activity amongst internet marketers. According to Overture, they had 43,947 searches for RSS in April 2005. Out of interest, that compares to 825,674 for internet marketing. It is unlikely that an ordinary consumer would search for RSS; they are interested in the subject rather than the technical delivery term. Over 40,000 searches is high, and I think it is a fair

SWOT Analysis Is No Magic 8 Ball

July 26th, 2008

Q: A key investor in my business has suggested that I hire a consultant to do a SWOT Analysis to help plan for the future. I try not to argue with my investors, but I’m not so sure I need to have this done. What do you think?
– Laurie B.

A: Laurie, before you call in the SWOT team to deal with this investor (sorry, couldn’t resist that one), let me tell you exactly what a SWOT Analysis is and how it can not only help you plan for the future, but get a gauge of how your business is doing today.

SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. A SWOT Analysis is a written exercise that can help you clarify and focus on the specifics that make up the four areas that most affect your business. The purpose of a SWOT Analysis is to help you build on your business’

Podcasting Monetization Strategies for Marketers

July 26th, 2008

With the growing popularity of podcasting, publishers and marketers around the world are asking themselves how to monetize this content channel.

Today we’ll be taking a look at how marketers can monetize podcasting through enhanced marketing activities.

While publishers might find it relatively easy to integrate podcasting in to their business models without really “creating a revolution”, the opportunities for marketers really go beyond traditional marketing tactics.

To understand the opportunity we need to understand what podcasting brings to the marketing table: the power of voice, delivered directly to our prospects, customers, employees and partners.

While text might still be the most “usable” format and the easiest to consume, voice itself has the unique feature of being able to express emotion and bring personality in to marketing communications.

For marketers, monetizing podcasting won’t come through ad sales or content sales, but through opportunities to enhance their marketing communications with the power of emotion, delivered directly
